Like the Iron Mink these early vans had an iron roof with a stiffening angle around the edges, and ribs across the underside of the roof. The latter were held by a double row of rivets and a steel band which presumably formed a joint between the individual plates of the roof.

The fret provides the components to suit brakes for a 9ft wheelbase wagon using 3ft diameter wheels.  There are adequate components for brakes on both sides of the wagon.  So for early wagons each fret will do for 2 wagons.  The grakes may be set up for independent (bottom door mineral wagons) or Moreton types where there is a cross shaft between the 2 sides.  The brakes are made up of 4 layers to be laminated so as to give a scale 3inch wide brake shoe. These come in two frets which fold over to give you precise location of the parts.  The outer 2 layers provide the hangers, and have a base which locates in the chassis fabrication, or may be fixed to the wagon floor with some packing if needed.  The fret also contains other solebar components to enhance scratch built wagon bodies. - such as plates, label clips, spring stops etc.  See the layout diagram from the link in the details page.

Most goods vans had the same detail when it comes to rainstrips on the roof. When first launched this little tool was intended for GWR vans.  However subsequently it was noted that most Railway Companies used the same detail over double doors.  The Southern also used a shorter strip over single van doors). However with many plastic kits this detail is poorly formed due to the need for the moulding to be easily withdrawn from the mould. This little tool enables you to fix each rainstrip quickly and accurately onto a prepared roof.

This kit contains replacement doors for post 1929 vans, and the extra brake gear which the updated vans had fitted. In 1928/9, all vans had their iron doors replaced with wooden planked doors, together with latches on the wagon side for securing the open doors. This fret provides you with the replacement doors, and the latches, as well as the rather oddbrake gear which only had one shoe on the second side. Brakes were originally on one side only with a simple lever. However by 1930 all Iron Minks had been fitted with an extra single axle brake on the other side.

This kit contains an etched roof with the correct pattern of rivet heads, for the Ratio Iron Mink Kit.

The kit enables you to add all the rivet detail to the iron roof. This may not show up in most photographs of the vans, because of the angle at which photos are normally taken. However models are usually viewed from above, and the character of the iron van is dependent on the rivet detail. It should be noted that these roofs are the correct width whereas the Ratio kit is 1mm too narrow. The roofs may also be used on the ABS whitemetal kit which is the correct width.
