The photographs indicate that the buffer stocks were painted the same colour as the wagon body - Midland Freight grey.  To fit the buffers, drill out a 2mm diameter hole in the headstock and glue the buffer in place - DO NOT TRY TO SOLDER.

 

References to many photographs in An illustrated History of Midland Wagons by R.J.Essery. Volumes 1 and 2. (On a personal note, the photograph on page 53 is not only interesting in that it also shows the fully finned wagon buffer of the Great Eastern Railway, but that photograph was taken in 1923 by my father's cousin by marriage - Dr Sam Cowan, who also encouraged my first efforts at loco building in the early '60s, when he gave me a brass sheet Evans kit for a Jinty.)
