These castings are available in sets (mostly of 4) and depict characters of the pre-Great War era. The subjects are taken from photographs and costume museums such as the Victoria and Albert Museum. Each figure is in a staionary pose, either standing or sitting (and lying on his back asleep). As well as detailed instructions for each figure in the description, there is a useful guide on figure painting (and animals).

The smooth haired collie is a typical working dog. Either stationary or walking forward slowly to his Shepherd's command, with ears back and head down, all his attention is concentrated on the sheep before him. In appearance he is almost timeless and would grace any hillside at any time.

Working together, the Welsh collie crouches while his partner guides the sheep. But if one or more break away, he will soon bring them back. So this dog should be placed to the side of the flock rather than to the rear. (Of course it might be a bitch)

Although lambs are seasonal, this could suit any layout based from March to June. Furthermore the shepherd's dress is very broad in terms of time. He could be placed in mid-Victorian time until about 1950 or so. However he would be a rare sight in modern times where lambing sheds are used.

The Border Collie is reputed to be the most intelligent of all sheepdogs. It is used throughout the world for herding animals. Its origins are in the Scottish Borders, where the rearing of sheep was developed in the ninth century, and making the area the centre of the British Wool trade. From this area the famous Cheviot breed of sheep were developed along with the sheepdogs. The area is also famous for the production of Tweed, this being the principal river in the area, and which powered the many watermills that processed the wool.

Sheep in Britain can be divided into the upland and lowland breeds. In general the lowland breeds are larger, and it is these that are depicted in this range of models. In general the coat is off-white, although occaisional black sheep are born into a flock. The faces and lower legs are either white or black depending on the breed. Modern sheep are mostly white, but older breeds, like Suffolks are black faced.
